BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Canisius Golden Griffins in overtime, 16-15, at the Demske Sports Complex on Sunday. The Red Foxes were led by sophomore Kelly Condon's (Roslyn, Pa.) five goals and three assists.
Marist (5-6, 2-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) jumped out to an early lead behind a balanced offense as four Red Foxes combined to give Marist a 4-1 lead over the first 10 minutes of play. Condon opened the scoring with her first goal of the contest only 1:29 after the opening whistle to give the Red Foxes the early 1-0 lead.
After Ashley Curtis answered for Canisius (6-7, 1-1 MAAC) with a goal of her own, the Red Foxes notched three consecutive goals. Condon assisted Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) in putting the Red Foxes up 2-1 with 23:47 remaining. Two minutes later, Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.) for the Red Foxes' fourth goal to give Marist a 4-1 lead with 21:22 left in the first half.
Following a free position goal by Curtis to cut the Griffs' deficit to 4-2, Rinefierd answered with a free position goal to give Marist a 5-2 lead at the 12:01 mark. The Red Foxes continued to capitalize on free position chances as Condon converted a free position shot with 9:46 remaining in the half for her second goal of the game and a 6-2 lead for the Red Foxes.
Canisius' Taylor Gray cut into Marist's lead, 6-3, with 6:14 remaining in the first; however, senior captain Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) answered immediately with her ninth goal on the season 35 seconds later to re-take a four goal advantage, 7-3. Procaccini added another goal to give the Red Foxes an 8-3 advantage with 4:25 remaining before Canisius' Marissa Brown added her first goal of the game to cut Marist's lead to 8-4 heading into the second half.
Following intermission, the Golden Griffins' offense emerged behind Megan Oosting's four second half goals. Oosting's first goal reduced Marist's lead to 9-6 with 26:39 remaining. The Red Foxes grew the lead to four, 11-7, after goals by Condon and Wilson at the 23:52 and 19:19 marks before Canisius recorded five consecutive goals to take their first lead of the day, 12-11. Oosting recorded back-to-back goals at 13:56 and 7:03 to cut the Red Foxes lead to 11-9. Teammates Brett Poissant and Jackie Loson followed with goals at the 5:55 and 5:20 marks to tie the game at 11-11 - the first time the game had been tied since Curtis notched the Griffs' first point of the afternoon, 3:02 into the contest. Oosting capped off Canisius' regulation scoring with 3:21 remaining to give the Griffs the 12-11 lead.
With 33 seconds remaining, Madeline Schuck (Cockeysville, Md.) caused Gray to turn the ball over in Marist's defensive zone. Ciccarello scooped up the ground ball and Marist charged ahead to clear the ball with 24 seconds left. After only seven seconds in the offensive zone, Condon recorded her fourth goal of the contest to tie the game at 12-12 and force overtime.
The Red Foxes and Canisius traded goals to open the overtime period. Condon recorded her final goal on the afternoon with 4:25 remaining to give Marist the 13-12 advantage. Marissa Brown followed Condon's goal with a free position tally 21 seconds later to tie the game at 13-13. Following a turnover caused by Erin Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.), Rinefierd answered Brown at the 3:20 mark to take a momentary 14-13 lead. However, 17 seconds later, Loson recorded her second goal to tie the game at 14-14.
Directly following Loson's goal, Meghan McGuigle added her name to the scoring column to give Canisius the lead, 15-14. Curtis padded the Griffs lead, 16-14, with her fourth goal with 1:30 remaining. Kramer cut the Red Foxes' deficit with a goal following Wilson's draw control win; however the Red Foxes were unable to secure another scoring opportunity before overtime ended with Canisius in front, 16-15.
The Red Foxes were outshot 41-36 on the afternoon and 6-3 in the overtime period. Marist converted all three of its shot attempts in overtime. Each team collected 23 groundballs while Canisius earned an 18-16 edge in draw controls. Rinefierd notched three goals and an assist for the Red Foxes in the losing effort, her second consecutive contest with four points.
The Red Foxes return to action at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Friday April 16 for a 7:00 p.m. contest against Manhattan.
