Marist Pulls Away In Second Half For 15-8 Win At Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - With the game tied 8-8 with 17:40 to play, the Marist women's lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals to win 15-8 over the Iona Gaels at Mazzella Field on Sunday. Sophomore attack Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) added four goals and an assist.

Marist (7-6, 4-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) got off to a strong start after allowing an early Iona (4-10, 1-3 MAAC) goal. Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) tied the game with a goal at the 27:31 mark of the first half. Condon then scored back-to-back goals to give the Red Foxes' a 3-1 lead with 24:01 to go in the half. Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) then scored with 20:43 left in the half to put Marist up 4-1. The Red Foxes increased the lead to four, 6-2, with goals by Rinefierd and Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.).

The Gaels came back with four goals in the final 12:21 of the half. Courtney Hocking started the run, as a Casey Scully tally made the score 6-4 with 12:00 to go. Elizabeth Coholan then got Iona within one, 6-5, with a goal at the 2:43 mark. Twenty-eight seconds later, Brittney Mabus tied the game 6-6, a score that held through halftime. Marist won 10 of 13 draw controls in the first half, outshooting Iona 16-15.

The Red Foxes got two quick goals to open the second half. Rinefierd and Procaccini scored back-to-back to put Marist ahead 8-6 with 22:21 left in the game. The Gaels came back with goals from Coholan and Scully to tie the game 8-8 with 17:40 to go. That's when Marist started its big run. Condon scored consecutive goals to give the Red Foxes a 10-8 lead with 16:17 remaining. Rinefierd then scored off a Kramer assist to make the score 11-8 with 9:45 to go in the game. Kramer then scored a goal of her own at the 8:13 mark to give Marist a 12-8 lead. The Red Foxes then got scores from Procaccini, Rinefierd, and Condon to close the run and the game. Marist outshot Iona 21-6 in the second half.

For the game, Marist outshot the Gaels 37-21. The Red Foxes also held a 17-8 advantage in draw controls, while the Gaels had a 26-18 edge in ground balls. Marist was 10-for-14 on clears. Scully led Iona with three goals.

Marist returns to action on Friday, April 23 with a 7 p.m. game against Fairfield at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
