POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In its final regular season match and a tune-up for this weekend's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, the Marist women's tennis team netted a 7-0 shutout victory over the Hartford Hawks at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion. Marist turned in strong performances from sophomore Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Julianna Boas (Curitiba, Brazil) who won at third and sixth singles respectively.
O'Donovan coasted past Nicole Haynal 6-0, 6-1, while Boas defeated Margaret Potkay by the same score. Additionally, O'Donovan teamed with sophomore Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) at second doubles for an 8-0 shutout over Haynal and Kaitlin Lennon. The pair of wins was the most one-sided victories in favor of O'Donovan this season.
At second singles, Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) held her opponent, Margaret Sabatino at love, 6-0, 6-0. Sun teamed up with classmate Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) in doubles for an 8-4 win over Livia Blasque and Sabatino. The win came at first doubles.
Junior Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y.) took her fourth singles match from Amanda Epstein 6-2, 6-3. In the second set she trailed 2-3, but came back to win the final four games to preserve the straight set victory.
At fifth singles, junior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) defeated Lennon 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the victory for Marist. Byron paired with Lukin at third doubles for an 8-1 win over Epstein and Potkay.
In the longest match of the day, McCarthy rallied from a first set loss to win the second set relatively easily and a third set tiebreak to lock up the shutout. She outlasted Blasque, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 and won the final four points of the tiebreak to finish off the Hawks.
Marist will next open play at the 2010 MAAC Championship in the quarterfinal round. The Red Foxes who are seeded second overall, will take on #7 Rider in the quarterfinals. First serves are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
