Marist Opens MAAC Water Polo League Play With Wins Over St. Francis (NY) And Wagner

VILLANOVA, PA. - The Marist water polo team opened MAAC Water Polo League play on Saturday with wins over the St. Francis (NY) Terriers and Wagner Seahawks at Villanova on Saturday. The Red Foxes defeated the Terriers 16-7 before taking down the Seahawks 9-6. Junior Jessica Getchius (Simi Valley, Calif.) had 23 saves in the two games.

Marist opened the day against St. Francis (NY). The Red Foxes led 3-1 after the first quarter, then exploded for eight goals in the second for an 11-3 halftime lead. The Terriers came back with three goals in the third quarter to close the gap to 12-6. Marist then scored four more goals in the fourth quarter for the 16-7 win. Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.), Emily St. Omer Roy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), and Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) each had three goals in the win. Rampton, Swartz, and Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) each had a pair of assists. Getchius made 13 saves with three steals and two assists.

The second quarter again proved beneficial for Marist in its second game against Wagner. After leading 2-1, the Red Foxes scored four goals in the second to take a 6-3 halftime lead. The Seahawks scored three times in the third to close within one, 7-6, but Marist shutout Wagner 2-0 in the fourth for the 9-6 win. Pauli scored five goals for the Red Foxes, with Swartz, Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas), and Desiree Desaulniers (Orlando, Fla.) adding one goal apiece. Getchius made 10 saves against Wagner and had two steals.

The Red Foxes, now 9-12 and 2-0 in conference, return to action on Saturday, April 10 at Siena. Marist will play St. Francis (NY) at 11:30 a.m. and Villanova at 4 p.m.
