NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Marist softball team lost its fourth straight game on Tuesday afternoon, at Columbia 10-2 in six innings. Two Red Foxes recorded multi-hit games in the contest. Freshman Brittany English (Wilton, Conn.) had two hits for the second straight game.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Corriss and Napoli each scored a run. Sophomore Lauren Napoli (Guilderland, N.Y.) gave Marist a two-run advantage on an RBI ground ball by Nicole DiVirgilio (Aston, Pa.). DiVirgilio now has a team-high 12 RBIs this season.
Columbia (7-17) responded with a six-run second inning in the bottom half of the frame. The Lions' offense drew five straight walks which generated five runs. The home team added a sixth on an RBI ground out by Allison Lam.
The Lions scored insurance runs in each of the third and fourth innings. The game was halted after an RBI single by Steph Yagi in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) suffered the loss for Marist. She threw two innings and struck out two batters. Schell surrendered seven walks and six earned runs.
Freshman pitcher Emily Osterhaus (Suanee, Ga.) got her first start in the circle in 15 games as she returned to the lineup from injury. She pitched one-plus inning before she left the game. In the bottom of the second she was hit in the hand with a line drive.
Marist (4-17) will continue its 13-game road trip on Thursday, April 8, when the Red Foxes travel to Hamilton, N.Y. for a doubleheader with Colgate. First pitch in the twinbill is slated for 3 p.m. Marist leads the all-time series with nine wins, six losses and a tie.
