NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - Led by four goals apiece from Lauren Ciccarello (Wantagh, N.Y.), Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.), and Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.), the Marist women's lacrosse team breezed to a 20-11 win over the Niagara Purple Eagles at Niagara Field on Friday night. The Red Foxes' 20 goals are a season-high, surpassing the 15 scored against Lafayette in the season opener on March 3.
Ciccarello and Kramer each had a pair of assists each for six points on the night. Sophomore attack Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.), the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week, had five points on the game with a goal and four assists.
Niagara (1-6, 0-1 MAAC) opened the scoring as Rianne Farrugia scored 18 seconds into the game to put the Purple Eagles ahead 1-0. Marist (5-5, 2-0 MAAC) then tied the game 1-1 with 28:13 to go in the first half on Procaccini's first goal of the game. Ciccarello scored her first goal at the 22:22 mark to give the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead. Procaccini then scored back-to-back goals to put Marist ahead 4-1 with 20:31 remaining in the half.
After the Purple Eagles scored to cut the deficit to two, 4-2, with 19:44 to go in the first, Marist scored four more goals in a row to take an 8-2 lead with 9:21 to go in the half. Kramer scored two of those goals with Ciccarello and Erin Wilson (Ada, Mich.) each adding one. Marist took a 9-4 lead into halftime after Kramer's third goal at the 4:48 mark of the half. The Red Foxes outshot Niagara 18-8 in the first half.
Marist opened the second half on another 4-0 run, with three of the goals scored by senior Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.). The Red Foxes' nine-goal lead with 20:22 to go would be rivaled by a ten-goal lead with 10:24 to go in the game. At that point, Lauren Cobb (Jamesville, N.Y.) scored with an assist from Condon to make the score 16-6. Marist would keep the lead at 10 with 4:45 to go on freshman Megan Walters' (Garden City, N.Y.) first goal of the season, taking a 19-9 lead.
The Red Foxes outshot the Purple Eagles 38-22 for the game, with an 18-13 edge in ground balls. Wilson led Marist with four grounders, as Erin Betsch (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Morgan Dillon (Freeport, N.Y.) each adding three. Marist also held a 22-11 advantage in draw controls.
Marist closes out its western New York road trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Canisius.
