POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist men's lacrosse fell to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Senior Night in the Red Foxes final contest of the regular season Saturday, 13-9. The leading point scorer for Marist was senior Kyle Reny (Marblehead, Mass.), who accumulated three points on one goal and two assists. Freshmen Ryan Sharkey (Westfield, N.J.) all notched two goals apiece.

Marist closes MAAC Lacrosse League play with 5-3 record, causing a three-way tie with Canisius at Manhattan. Per MAAC rules, the first tiebreaker for three or more teams is to form a mini-league of the tied teams. Each team went 1-1 against the other two. The next step in the tiebreaker is to compare records against the team that finished first and on down. All three teams lost to Siena and Mount St. Mary's, and beat the teams that finished sixth through ninth.

The third step is for the Commissioner to to break the tie with a random draw. At 9 a.m. Sunday, the Commissioner will put Marist, Canisius, and Manhattan into a hat. The team that is drawn will not be in the MAAC Tournament field. The two teams that remain will be seeded third or fourth depending on the head-to-head result from the regular season.

Mount St. Mary's (10-4, 7-1 MAAC Lacrosse League) Bryant Schmidt and Drew Dunn scored back-to-back goals with 9:54 and 8:13 remaining in the first quarter to put the Red Foxes down early, 2-0.

Two minutes later, Marks notched his third goal of the season off a pass from senior Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) to cut the Mountaineers' lead to one, 2-1.

Marist (8-6, 5-3 MAAC) tied it at 2-2 at the 4:32 mark. Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) assisted Rice on an extra-man goal, his first of the contest. With this goal, Rice notched at least one point in each of the Red Foxes' 14 regular season contests.

In the second quarter, Marist outshot Mount St. Mary's 12-3 although the Red Foxes failed to convert. Mountaineers's goalie T.C. DiBartolo had six saves in the second period. In the second, senior Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) kept Mount St. Mary's off the board, making two saves. For the first half, the Red Foxes outshot Mount St. Mary's 20 to 14 and grabbed 12 ground balls to the Mountaineers' four. Marist and Mount St. Mary's split the face-offs with three wins each while each team was 9-for-9 on clear attempts.

The Mountaineers' offense opened the third period strong, notching three consecutive goals to take a 5-2 lead with 10:38 remaining. After 4:35 of scoreless play, Sharkey notched his first goal of the contest on a pass from Reny to cut Mount St. Mary's lead to 5-3 with 6:03 still to play in the third.

The Mountaineers' answered with three consecutive goals; Andrew Scalley notched his second and third and Robert Owen scored his first to give Mount St. Mary's a 7-3 lead with 4:45 remaining in the third. Off the face-off following Scalley's third goal, Kevin Defranco (Shoreham, N.Y.) sprinted down the center of the field and put a shot past DiBartolo for his first goal and point of the season with 2:12 remaining in the quarter.

Scalley concluded scoring in the third quarter with his fourth goal of the contest, stretching Mount St. Mary's lead to 9-4 entering the fourth.

The Red Foxes followed with consecutive goals from Marks, Sharkey and Reny to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 8:04 to go. After Ben Trapp notched his first goal on the season for Mount St. Mary's, Rice and junior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) answered with back-to-back goals with 7:03 and 5:40 remaining to bring Marist within two. Zindel joined Rice in recording at least one point in every contest of the regular season with his lone goal of the game.

The Red Foxes would not get any closer than 11-9 as Cody Lehrer and Scalley scored goals with 2:06 and 27 seconds remaining to reach the final score of 13-9.

For the contest, Mount St. Mary's outshot Marist 33-32 and scooped up 26 ground balls to the Red Foxes' 25.
