SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The second-seeded University of Southern California used two 8-0 runs to power its way past the seventh-seeded Marist women's water polo team in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Championship on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of San Diego State University. Senior Samantha Swartz (Harleysville, Pa.) paced the Red Foxes offense with two goals, both of which were scored in six on five situations.
Marist got three fourth quarter goals from seniors Kristen Barnett (Houston, Texas) and Angie Rampton (Simi Valley, Calif.) and junior Agnes Konopka (Simi Valley, Calif.). Rampton also notched an assist, while Barnett drew three ejections in the contest.
The Trojans scored the game's first eight goals over a span of 9:53. Joelle Bekhazi scored three of the first four goals for the Women of Troy. The run was capped by an Alexandra Kiss tally with 6:07 to play in the second stanza.
Swartz got Marist on the board in a man-up situation with 5:40 to play in the second quarter. For the afternoon, the Red Foxes scored four of their five goals with a man advantage.
Kiss gave USC an eight-goal lead just 36 seconds after Swartz's tally. The Kiss goal began a second stretch of eight straight tallies by the Trojans.
Swartz ended the Trojans' run in the third quarter with 2:04 to play, eight seconds after a Marist timeout. Following her second goal of the afternoon, Marist trailed 16-2.
In the fourth quarter, Marist and USC each scored three goals. The teams traded markers over the final 4:24 of the game. Barnett and Konopka scored just 47 seconds apart at the 3:06 and 2:19 marks respectively. Rampton notched the final goal of the game with 26 seconds to play to arrive at the final score of 20-5.
Marist will return to the pool on Saturday, May 15 in the consolation round and face #3-seeded UCLA, the 2009 NCAA Champions. The Bruins dropped a 5-4 decision to sixth-seeded Loyola Marymount on Friday afternoon to arrive in the consolation round. The opening sprint is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT/12:30 p.m. PDT.
