POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Will Lanier has been promoted to Assistant Coach on the Marist men's basketball staff, it was announced Wednesday by Head Coach Chuck Martin. Lanier is heading into his third season on the Red Foxes' staff, having served the previous two as the program's Director of Operations.
Lanier's new responsibilities include on-the-road recruiting and on-the-floor coaching and teaching.
"I have all the confidence in the world that Will is going to do a tremendous job as a recruiter and as a teacher on the court," Martin said. "He's a bright, young coach who's on the rise in this profession."
Prior to his arrival at Marist, Lanier spent four seasons on the staff of St. John's University in the Big East Conference. Lanier also served as Assistant Director of the Norm Roberts Summer Basketball Camp, and ran St. John's Team Camp, which enabled him to build strong relationships with New York City's high school coaches. He also received his master's degree in school building leadership in the school of education at St. John's.
As an undergraduate, Lanier attended Georgia Tech, where he received a B.S. in business management in 2004. In his time at Georgia Tech, Lanier served as head manager on head coach Paul Hewitt's staff. The Yellow Jackets reached the national championship game in 2004.
The assistant position at Marist became open following the departure of Bashir Mason. Lanier's replacement as Director of Operations will be named at a later date.
