WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Maria Eduarda Yurgel (Pelotas State, Brazil) of the Marist women's tennis team netted a pair of wins on the first day of the Eastern Championships hosted by Army on Friday. Additionally, junior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) won her first round singles match at the tournament.
Yurgel beat the seventh-seeded Margaret Iliev of Army in the first round 6-4, 6-2, before she prevailed over Susanna Howard of Bowdoin 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16. As a result of the two wins, Yurgel will play in the quarterfinals in Flight C on Saturday.
McCarthy also won her first round match in the Round of 32 on Friday. The junior defeated NJIT's Martina Tripcovici 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 11-9 for the win. In the second round she lost to Laura Danzig of Amerhest, 6-1, 6-0. Danzig was seeded fifth in Flight B.
The Red Foxes will return to the courts at West Point on Saturday morning for the second day of the Eastern Championships.
