STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Marist College men's cross country team placed 11th out of 21 schools at the Penn State National Invitational on Friday. The meet was held in a heavy rain storm on a rain-soaked and muddy Penn State Golf Course.
The Red Foxes totaled 265 points, just one point behind 10th-place Akron and less than 30 points behind seventh-place Penn in a tightly packed field. The team placement was an improvement over Marist's 2010 showing at the meet, when the Red Foxes placed 12th with 344 points.
Senior captain William Griffin (Columbia, Conn.) led the way for the Red Foxes, placing 19th overall out of 189 finishers. Griffin covered the 5.2-mile course in 27:03. Senior captain Matthew Flint (Queensbury, N.Y.) followed closely behind, placing 23rd in 27:10.
Sophomore Ken Walshak (Babylon, N.Y.) enjoyed his best race of the season, placing 56th in 27:46. Freshman Justin Tampellini (Commack, N.Y.) and senior captain Thomas Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Marist.
The remainder of the men's cross country team will be in action on Saturday morning at the UAlbany Invitational.
