POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team won their final home meet of the 2011 calendar year with a hard-fought 151-148 decision over Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at the McCann Natatorium. Sophomore Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and freshman Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) each earned multiple event wins for the Red Foxes.
Spinella had a strong meet for the Red Foxes on Saturday. His first event victory was in the 200-yd. freestyle, where he held off junior teammate Stephen Miller (Downington, Pa.) by .53 seconds with the 1:47.59 win. Spinella was involved in another tight battle with a fellow Red Fox as freshman Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.) held him off in the 100-yd backstroke with a 54.18 win. In his third individual event, the 200-yd backstroke, he won with a time of 1:56.36.
Ruddy's multi-win afternoon began when he secured a dominate victory for Marist in the 200-yd butterfly as he swam to a 1:55.45 win, 5.32 seconds clear of second place. In a deciding race, event 30, the 200-yd IM, he came through with a .41 victory over Binghamton's Josh Saccurato at 1:57.59.
Sprint freestyler John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) won the 100-yd race with a time of 48.42, shortly after earning a second place finish in the 50-yd event.
In diving action, sophomore Sean Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) earned the Red Foxes nine points with his 6.75 point victory in the 3-meter board. He finished with a six dive total of 258.90.
The Red Foxes will return to action in two weeks at the two-day H2ounds Invitational at Loyola that begins on Friday, Dec. 2.
