Marist Men's Basketball Falls To New Hampshire 73-56

DURHAM, N.H. - The Marist men's basketball team (4-6) fell to New Hampshire (4-4) by a score of 73-56 in the first game for the Red Foxes following a ten-day break for exams.  Devin Price's (Inglewood, Calif.) team-leading 14 point showing wasn't enough as the Wildcats shot 54.5 percent in the second half to pull away from the Red Foxes.

After a slow start by both teams, in which they combined for six points over the first five minutes, a 10-0 run by Marist put the Red Foxes ahead 12-2 at the 12:28 mark. Sophomore Pieter Prinsloo (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Price led the effort with four points a piece.

New Hampshire quickly came back with a strong run of their own at 11-2 to bring the game within one at 14-13 with 9:22. Over the next three minutes, the teams would trade baskets, with neither leading by more than three points. During this span of play, Prinsloo would notch his third basket to give him a career-best sixth point.

The final 6:21 of the half closed out with UNH extending their two point lead to five for a 31-26 halftime score.

At the break, Price was the leading scoring Red Fox as he posted eight points on 2-4 shooting from the field along with four made free throws. Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) and Prinsloo each contributed six points. As a team, Marist trailed UNH in all three shooting categories; field goals, 37.5 percent (12-32) to 33.3 (10-30), three pointers, 33.3 (2-6) to 0.0 (0-4) and free throws, 62.5 (5-8) to 46.2 (6-13).

Coming out in the second half, Marist struggled to contain Alvin Abreu as the senior shooting guard scored eight points in the first 5:13 of play. Combined with 70 percent field goal shooting, UNH was able to stretch their lead to 15 at 47-32.

The Red Foxes cut the lead to 11 points with 13:17 to play on the strength of six consecutive made free throws by sophomore Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.).

Marist continued to pressure the Wildcats throughout, but to no avail as the hot UNH shooting persisted to a tune of 54.5 percent.

After 40 minutes of action at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, N.H. the final score was 73-56 in favor of New Hampshire.

For the game, Price and Kemp were the only Red Foxes with double figure point totals at 14 and 10. Lewis finished eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Defensively, Kemp registered four blocks, while Price had four steals.

As a team, Marist trailed UNH in field goal and three-point percentages at 46.2 (30-65) to 32.7 (18-55) and 40.0 (6-15) to 11.1 (1-9). The Red Foxes were able to convert 19 of 30 free throws for 63.3 percent versus seven of 12 (58.3) for the Wildcats.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday, Dec. 21 when they welcome Hartford to Poughkeepsie for a 7 p.m. matchup at McCann Arena.
