Women's Lacrosse Drops 13-8 Decision To Lehigh In Season-Opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team lost their season-opener 13-8 to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday afternoon. Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three goals, while junior Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) and freshman Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored two goals apiece.

Lehigh jumped out to a 2-0 lead on consecutive free position goals to begin the game. Sophomore Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) put Marist on the board with 10:57 to play in the first half.

Lehigh extended their lead 5-1 with free position goals by Dykstra, Allison Thomas, and Megan Kelly. Marist answered back with 12:42 left with a goal by Romano assisted by Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) and an unassisted goal by Kramer cutting the deficit to two, 5-3. After the Mountain Hawks scored consecutive goals, the Red Foxes responded with two of their own to make the halftime score 7-5 in favor of Lehigh.

To start the second half, Lehigh's Chelsea Retaleato scored at the 21:41 mark, assisted by Kelly Draper , giving Lehigh a 8-5 lead over the Foxes. The Mountain Hawks scored again at 20:19 with a free position shot from Lauren Dykstra her third on the day on sophomore goalie Ashley Casiano. Marist's first goal of the half was an unassisted goal by sophomore Jamie Romano her second of the match bringing the score 6-9.

Lehigh grew the lead to as many as five on three occasions in the second half and scored four out of five goals to begin the second half to pull away.

For the contest, the Lehigh outshot the Red Foxes 29-21 and earned a 25-11 advantage on groundballs. Marist committed 16 turnovers to Lehigh's 11. Fitzpatrick earned 5 saves on the day for Lehigh. Junior Alyssa Littin (Coronado, Calif.) and sophomore Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) totaled nine saves on the match and each played a half.

The Red Foxes travel to Easton, Pa., to take on the Lafayette Leopards on Wednesday, February 23 at 5:30 p.m.
