POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the first ever match-up between the Marist women's lacrosse team and 12th-ranked UMass, a 13-0 run over a span of nearly 29 minutes propelled the Minutewomen to a 23-7 win over the Red Foxes on Tuesday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.
Marist (3-5) was led by junior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa), who scored three goals and extended her consecutive point streak to 10 games. UMass (7-1) was led by Nina Sarcona's four goals. Jesse O'Donnell and Katie Ferris contributed three apiece.
Condon's goal at 27:07 opened the scoring. The Minutewomen responded by scoring four of the next five goals to take a 4-2 lead with 20:16 remaining in the first half. The Red Foxes responded with goals from freshman Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn) and sophomore Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, NY) to knot the score at four with 17:58 remaining.
Reigning Atlantic-10 player of the year Jackie Lyons' goal with 17:02 remaining gave UMass the lead, beginning an 8-0 UMass run to conclude the first half. The Minutewomen attack continued in the second half with four consecutive goals. Condon's second goal of the game at the 18:19 mark ended Marist's scoring drought. After six more goals from UMass, Marist scored two consecutive goals, including a third from Condon, to close out the contest.
For the game, UMass shot Marist 44-13. The Red Foxes amassed 21 turnovers, while the Minutewomen committed 12.
Marist will return to action on Thursday, March 31 in a home contest against Denver. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. at Tenney Stadium.
