POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's tennis team knocked off each of its opponents in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion. The Red Foxes beat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Saint Peter's 4-3 and America East opponent Hartford 6-1. The wins improved Marist to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC.
Match One
The Red Foxes won the doubles point to start the afternoon. Sophomore Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and senior Retta Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) downed Vanessa Vogel and Jessica Nowgoovki 8-3.
In singles, Livingston defeated Raynor 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 3-2 (ret.) at first singles. At second singles, McCarthy downed Chen 6-2, 6-2. Sun beat Williams 6-2, 6-2 at third singles, the victory that clinched the match win for the Red Foxes. Grbelja defeated Campbell at fourth singles, while Vogel beat O'Donovan 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles. In the final slot, Jeannie Lukin (Kinderhook, N.Y) beat Jessica Nowogrodzki.
Match Two
Against Hartford, McCarthy and O'Donovan beat Katina Zampas and Maggie Sabatino 9-7. At second doubles, Sun and Campbell defeated Kaitlin Lennon and Haley Gileau 8-0. In the third slot, Lukin and Byron downed Nicole Haynal and Emily Willhoft 8-3.
In singles action, McCarthy defeated Zampas 6-3, 6-0. Sun beat Sabatino 6-2, 4-1 (ret.) Campbell lost to Ashley Harel 6-2, 6-4. At fourth singles, Lukin beat Haynal 6-0, 6-2 while Byron defeated Lennon 6-3, 7-5 at fifth singles. In the final slot, senior Juliana Boas (Curitiba, Brazil) knocked off Gileau 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Marist will next take on MAAC foe Manhattan on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
