Final Stats
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Red Foxes lost a hard-fought game versus the host Stags on Sunday afternoon in their MAAC conference opener by a score of 12-9. In a game in which the Red Foxes went scoreless for the first 20 minutes and down 4-0, they were able to claw their way back to lead at one point and tie the game two other times in the second half. For the game, junior Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Marist offense with four goals scored and an assist in her first game back since injuring her knee at Yale on March 12. She was joined in the multi-point scoring column by junior Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who netted two goals.
The rematch of the 2010 MAAC Championship began with Fairfield building up a 4-0 lead over the first 17:33 of the first half. Freshman Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) got the Red Foxes on the board when she converted a free position shot with 9:36 remaining. Haas notched her first goal of the game off a Kramer pass at the 6:09 mark. Fairfield's Chloe Mangan scored her fourth goal of the game at 4:57 to put Fairfield's advantage up to 5-2. Two Marist goals by Haas and Kramer in the final 51 seconds of the half closed the gap to 5-4 as the teams went to break.
In the second half, the Red Foxes kept their foot on the gas as junior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) converted a free position shot 50 seconds in. A mere 19 seconds later, a successful draw control and quick outlet pass led to Kramer notching her second goal of the game at 28:51. In a span of 10 minutes and 45 seconds, the Red Foxes had erased a four goal lead and overtaken the Stags to go up 6-5. Over the next three minutes, the Stags responded with two goals to snatch back the lead at 7-6.
The fast-paced scoring continued as Marist and Fairfield exchanged goals from 24:15 to 21:30. Kramer and junior Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) scored for Marist, while Mangan notched her fifth goal of the game for Fairfield.
After seeing seven goals scored in the first nine and a half minutes of second half, the final twenty took on a completely look as penalties and subsequent penalty killing slowed the paced. With an 8-8 score sitting on the scoreboard at Lessing Field for over ten minutes, the offense finally reappeared at the 11:04 mark and unfortunately for Marist, it was the Stags, who broke back into the scoring column. Now up 9-8, the Stags closed out the game by outscoring the Red Foxes three to one over the final 10:03. Kramer notched her fourth goal of the game with 38 seconds remaining. After 60 minutes, Fairfield came out on top by a score of 12-9.
Statistical leaders for Marist included Haas, who caused two turnovers and collected four ground balls and Romano, who won four draw controls.
For the game, Marist won more draw controls at 13-8, had more caused turnovers at 7-5 and converted five of eight free-position shots versus two of five for Fairfield.
Condon and Romano each extended their consecutive points scored streaks to 12 and 10 games respectively.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Friday, April 8 as they host Canisius for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
