POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Scott Nelson has announced his resignation after three seasons to become head coach at Binghamton University. Nelson was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League Coach of the Year in 2011 after guiding the Red Foxes to their second straight winning season and the number two seed in the league tournament.
Nelson led the Red Foxes to a 20-23 overall record and a 13-9 mark in MAAC play over the last three seasons. Marist finished 8-7 overall in each of the last two seasons, with a 5-3 MAAC record in 2010 and a 4-2 league mark in 2011. The Red Foxes qualified for the MAAC Tournament each of the last two seasons.
In 2011, Marist set a program record with seven consecutive wins to close the regular season. Five of the victories came by one goal, with three coming in overtime. The Red Foxes' first win of the season was a 12-7 triumph over 16th-ranked Albany on March 22.
In Nelson's tenure, the Red Foxes had 10 First or Second Team All-MAAC honorees, 30 MAAC All-Academic selections and one MAAC Rookie of the Year - Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) in 2010.
A national search for Nelson's successor will begin immediately.
