Marist Men's Soccer Battles Hartford to 1-1 Tie

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - In Marist's concluding match of their non-conference schedule the Red Foxes fought to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Hartford. Marist (4-2-3) was led by senior Lucas Szabo's (Bethesda, Md.) game-tying goal in the 75th, as well as by six saves by grad student goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny (LaGrangeville, N.Y.)

The Red Foxes began the match with two attempts on goal in the first 12 minutes of action. Both a header by freshman Matt Wendelken (Massapequa, N.Y.) and a shot by Szabo drew saves by Hartford's goalkeeper Luke Citriniti.

Hartford responded with offensive pressure of their own in the first half. Following four shots towards net, the team's fifth attempt found the back of the net as Atobra Ampadu tallied his first goal of the year on a low shot to the right corner at the 40:33 mark.

Coming out of half down 1-0, the Red Foxes continued fighting hard for an equalizer. On the offensive end, junior Stephan Brossard (Port Washington, N.Y.) registered the team's first shot on goal of the half in the 62nd minute. Defensively, Skonieczny also played a role in keeping it a one goal game as he snagged two shots on goal within a seven minute period of play.

The combination of tough defense and a harassing offense finally equaled a 1-1 tie for Marist in the 75th minute as Brossard lofted a cross into the box that Szabo deposited with his head into the upper right 90.

The defense and Skonieczny held strong over the final 15 minutes as Hartford looked for the game-winning goal. The Hawks registered four shots (two on goal and one blocked), as well as had four corner kick opportunities.

In the overtime periods, the Hawks had plenty of chances to secure the win, but the Red Foxes' defense stood tall. In total, Hartford registered six shots towards net during the 20 minutes of play; the best chance was an Anthony Santaga shot in the 95th minute that Skonieczny stonewalled.
