SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Marist was held to just a .145 hitting percentage as a team as the Fresno State Bulldogs defeated the Red Foxes in straight sets (22-25, 16-25, 14-25) Saturday evening. Junior Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) led Marist with 12 assists and six digs to go along with five kills.
A kill by Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) got the Red Foxes (2-5) out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but the Bulldogs quickly came back to tie the score at 4-4. A Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) kill gave Marist the lead back at 8-7, but that would be the last lead the Red Foxes would enjoy for the match. Three Fresno State (3-3) errors closed the deficit to one at 23-22, but kills by Cecilia Agraz and Marissa Brand closed out the set.
The Bulldogs held Marist to a combined .089 over the final two sets, while hitting at an astounding .456 clip over the same period.
Foss finished with a team-high six kills and five digs and freshman Chelsea Kennedy (Arcadia, Calif.) tied Stoiberg for team-high honors with six digs apiece.
Earlier in the day, the tournament host Sacramento State kept Marist to negative hitting percentages in the first two sets in cruising to a 3-0 decision (15-25, 12-25, 15-25) over the Red Foxes.
Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) and Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) each had six kills to lead Marist hitters. Estes also shared team-high honors with Kennedy and Stoiberg as all three finished with seven digs. Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) chipped in with 11 assists and six digs.
Marist returns to action next week when the team travels to Army for the West Point Challenge. The Red Foxes will take on Dartmouth and NJIT on Friday at 2 and 5 p.m., respectively. They will then play host Army Sunday evening at 5 p.m.
