ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Marist men's swimming and diving team stands in sixth place after the first
day of competition at the 2012 ECAC Swimming & Diving Championships. Hosted by the United States Naval Academy, Marist
had a pair of finalists in both the 3-meter board and 200-yd IM. Sophomore Sean
Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) was the team's top individual performer.
Competing in the 3-meter board, Molloy finished in third
place with a score of 288.55. He was joined by freshman Jacob Baker
(Shavertown, Pa.) in the Championship Final. Baker finished eighth with a
226.25 point total.
The 200-yd Individual Medley was the Red Foxes' most
successful swimming event of the day as they had a pair of swimmers in finals
action. In the Championship Final, freshman Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.)
finished in seventh place with a time of 1:53.85, while Nick Spinella finished
14th overall with the sixth-best time in the Consolation Final at
1:54.58.
The men's top relay finish of the evening was in the 200-yd
freestyle relay. Junior Tyler Ferraro (Southbury, Conn.), sophomores Alex
Lombardi (Branford, Conn.) and Nick Spinella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
freshman John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) teamed up to post a time of 1:24.81 and
take sixth place.
After the first day of the championship, Navy leads 14
teams, who have had participants in finals, with 210.5 points.
The 2012 ECAC Championship will continue on Saturday morning
at 10 a.m., with the qualifying heats of events 13-25. The finals for the same
events will be held Saturday evening, with the first race scheduled to begin at
6 p.m.
