EDISON, N.J. - In
the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's player of the week awards, freshman
guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week in
recognition of his play versus Manhattan and Canisius this past week.
Lewis received the first two starts of his career this past
week, at Manhattan on Thursday and at home versus Canisius on Saturday, as Head
Coach Chuck Martin looked to change up his starting lineup and infuse more
scoring into Marist's offense. The freshman guard repaid Martin's faith in him
with two excellent efforts, a team-high 11 points versus Manhattan and 15 in
the Marist's 80-69 win over the Golden Griffins.
Besides scoring, Lewis filled
both of the box scores with a variety of stats. He finished with four rebounds,
three assists, three steals and two blocks at Manhattan, and three rebounds,
three assists and a steal versus Canisius. For the week, he averaged 13.0
points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game, while
shooting .429 (9-21) from the field.
This is his second career MAAC weekly honor as he earned
honors for the week of Nov. 28. Overall, this is the second award for the team this
season.
The Red Foxes (8-15, 3-9 MAAC) will next be in action on
Thursday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Jersey City to take on the defending MAAC
Champion Saint Peter's Peacocks. The game is slated for an 8:30 p.m. start.
