Marist Takes On ACC Powerhouse Maryland Saturday Afternoon

The Marist men's lacrosse team (2-0) will travel to Maryland on Saturday to face University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), currently ranked fourth in the country.  This will be the third game of a four game road trip to start the season. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.

Last time out: The Marist men's lacrosse team continued their four game road swing to start the season with a 10-9 come from behind victory at Stony Brook Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest.

Trailing 9-7 with 5:55 left in the game, Jack Doherty (Yorktown, Heights, N.Y.) got the comeback started with a man-up goal off of a feed from Connor Rice(Penfield, N.Y.). Just a minute later, Rice scored a man-up goal of his own to knot the score at 9-9.

With under a minute to go, Doherty returned the favor, finding Rice for the game-winner with 36 seconds remaining. The Marist (2-0) defense did not allow a shot on goal over the final 10:29, meanwhile blocking to shot attempts and forcing four turnovers.

The Red Foxes were paced by Rice who recorded his second straight five-point performance with three goals and two assists. Doherty also had three goals for his second consecutive hat trick and added an assist as well.  Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) also recorded his second multi-point performance of the season with two goals.  Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) also found the back of the net and Craig Goodermote (Holtsville, N.Y.) made six saves in goal.

Scouting Maryland: The Terrapins come into this weekend's game with a 3-1 record. They are coming off of a 8-7 loss to UMBC on Tuesday. This comes after defeating Hartford, Georgetown and Duke.

Maryland has outscored their opponents with 45-32so far this season and have attempted 139 shots, an average of 34.8 shots per game.

Junior midfielder John Haus leads the Maryland offense so far this season with six goals and 12 total points. Senior Joe Cummings is second with seven goals and 10 points.

Junior Curtis Holmes has helped the Terrapins defense by scooping up 19 ground balls in their first four games of the season. Junior Jesse Bernhardt has also been a critical defensive player grabbing 18 ground balls. Junior Landon Carr has 14 ground balls while senior Drew Snider, and sophomores Michael Ehrhardt and Brian Cooper each have 10.  Sophomore Goalie Niko Amato has played the majority of time in goal for the Terps through their first four games, making 37 saves and grabbing 14 ground balls.

National Streak: Connor Rice currently is riding a 32-game point streak, which is tied for the ninth longest active streak in the country. He has registered a point every game in his 2+ seasons at Marist, including five in both of the Red Foxes' games this season. Overall, he has 65 goals and 47 assists in the streak

Honoring Eddie: For the entirety of this season, the Red Foxes are honoring the memory of Eddie Coombs with jersey patches and sticker helmets. A third tribute to their lost teammate is that each game, someone on the team will wear his #34 jersey. The player, who will be chosen by the coaches prior to each game, must earn the honor in practice and in the previous game.
