DENVER - Two
nights after a come-from-behind victory over Saint Mary's, the Marist women's
lacrosse team was in action again at Denver University, this time versus the
host Pioneers. Faced with an eight goal deficit at halftime, the Red Foxes mounted
a hard fought comeback in the second half before eventually falling 16-11. Senior
Ariel Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) led Marist's offensive effort with four points on
three goals and an assist.
Denver posed as strong opposition for the visiting Red
Foxes on Tuesday night. The runners-up in the Mountain Pacific Sport Federation
(MPSF) in 2011, the Pioneers netted a series of nine consecutive goals in the
first half to take a 9-1 lead into the locker room. Marist's lone goal of the
half came 4:11 into play as freshman Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn)
registered a score for the fourth straight game.
Coming out in the second half, a quick Pioneer goal at
28:29 extended their lead to 10-1. From this point until the clock showed
zeroes, the Red Foxes would fight hard and claw their way back into the
contest, while netting 10 goals.
In a matter of 25 seconds, sophomore Jamie Romano (Kings
Park, N.Y.) and Leonard would score back-to-back goals at 27:44 and 27:19.
Denver would follow up this short run with a 4-2 run of its own over the next
13-plus minutes to push the score to 14-5. Ariel Kramer was the scorer for
Marist in both of the team's goals.
The Red Foxes closed the final 14 minutes with a 6-2 run.
Romano kicked off the scoring with the first goal on 13:52. Junior Ashley
Miller (Montville, N.J.) and freshman Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scored
the second and third consecutive unanswered goals at 10:44 and 9:56 via
free-position shots.
Following back-and-forth trading of goals, at 5:40 by
Denver's Jill Remenapp, 3:45 by senior Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
2:52 by the Pioneers' Rachael Dillon, Marist notched the last two scores. Both
Kramer and Romano completed their individual hat tricks with goals at 2:05 and
1:00, respectively to draw the game final at 16-11.
As a team, the Red Foxes led the Pioneers in overall draw
controls at 17-12 and in saves at 7-6. Denver registered more shots at 35-22
and caused turnovers at 13-9.
Individually, Kramer led all scorers with four points on
three goals and an assist. She was joined by Romano (3) and Leonard (2) as
multi-goal scorers. On defense, junior Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.)
and freshman Liz Holmes (Longmeadow, Mass.) shared time in goal with Casiano
stopping five shots and Holmes two.
The Red Foxes will complete their three game West Coast trip
with a matchup versus Oregon on Friday, March 16. The game is slated for a 7:30
p.m. EST opening draw in Portland.
