LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -
In the final game of a three game western U.S. road trip, the Marist women's
lacrosse team was defeated by Oregon, 17-6. An early run of goals in the first
half by the Ducks proved too much to overcome for the Red Foxes, who equaled Oregon's
offensive output in the second half, 5-5. Sophomore Jamie Romano (Kings Park,
N.Y.) led Marist offensively with four points on three goals and an assist.
The preseason number two team in the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation's 2012 Coaches Poll, the Ducks stood as a tough task for
Marist to face off against on Friday night. After an Oregon goal 3:32 into the
contest, Romano evened the score up at 1-1 with her 17th goal of the
year at 25:43. The Ducks then ran off an 11-0 run to send the game into
halftime at 12-1. A leading factor in Oregon's run was their goalkeeper
Caroline Federighi, who turned aside six Red Fox shots on goal in the first
half, including three by senior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.).
In the second half, junior Ashley Miller (Montville,
N.J.) scored the first of five goals for Marist, who played the Ducks even with
five scores a piece in the final 30 minutes. Miller's tally, her 11th
of the season was netted at 27:59.
Romano played in role in three of the Red Foxes' final
four scores, as she assisted on junior Amanda Tuck's (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) goal at
12:22, while netting unassisted goals at 10:39 and 0:07.
Freshman Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) was the other
goal scorer for Marist as she recorded her third score of the year with 55
seconds remaining in the game.
As a team, Marist controlled more draws at 14 to 11,
though they were outshot by Oregon 25 to 20.
The Red Foxes will be off for a week before picking up
their schedule on Saturday, March 24 at Stony Brook. The opening draw is slated
for 1 p.m.
