RADFORD, Va. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 6-5 loss in the rubber game of a three-game series at Radford on Sunday. Sophomore right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) paced the Red Foxes offensively by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run.
The Red Foxes had 13 hits on the day. Sophomore left fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) also enjoyed a three-hit day.
Welsh's three-run homer gave Marist a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Radford answered with three runs in the fifth, and took the lead for good with a two-run eighth.
For Radford, which had 14 hits, right fielder Cory Turner went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.
Junior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) took the loss for Marist to fall to 0-3. Houseal allowed all six Radford runs, five of which were earned, in seven-plus innings. Radford's Jason Patten (1-2) earned the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Abram Williams pitched the ninth for his third save.
Marist fell to 4-9 this season; Radford improved to 10-10. The Red Foxes will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Albany for a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
