POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.
- Wednesday afternoon's matchup featured two teams in Marist and
Binghamton, who were hungry for their first wins of the young 2011-12 season and
70 plus minutes of action proved it. After 10 minutes and 51 seconds of
overtime action, the Bearcats came away with the sudden death game-winner with
1:09 left to earn win number one by a score of 17-16. The Red Foxes were led by
four goals by sophomore Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) and a trio of scores by junior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.).
Marist got on the scoreboard quickly when senior Ariel
Kramer (Syracuse, N.Y.) set up fellow classmate Shannon Haas (Farmingdale,
N.Y.) for a score just 60 seconds in. Kramer set up the Red Foxes' second goal
as well, when Amanda Tuck one-timed Kramer's pass into the back of the net.
Marist's offense wasn't done yet, as senior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) and
Kramer netted two more goals. Kramer's goal at 22:40 was especially noteworthy
as she won the draw control and sprinted down the field to deposit the goal
just 13 seconds after Condon's.
Binghamton's leading scorer Lis Zuern halted the fast
start by Marist with an unassisted tally at 19:41.
With a three goal lead at 4-1, the Red Foxes put together
another four goal unanswered run from 19:27 to 12:52. Jamie Romano began the
scoring in similar fashion to Kramer's goal, as she won the draw and darted up
field to beat the Bearcat goalkeeper. Freshman Emily Leonard (Brookfield,
Conn.) netted the second goal of the run via a free-position goal. Goal number
three came courtesy of sophomore Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.), the first
of the season for her. Haas' second goal of the game rounded out the scoring
for Marist at 12:52.
Down 8-1, Binghamton closed the half with six unanswered
goals to make the score 8-7 in favor of Marist at the break. The Red Foxes held
a 13-3 advantage in draw controls and a 4-0 margin in goalie saves, while the
Bearcats had a shooting advantage of 15 to 9 and a ground ball lead of 15 to 9.
All but one of Marist shots were on goal and all eight shots on goal were
scores.
Coming out after halftime, Binghamton evened it up at 8-8
with a Katherine Hunsberger tally. Marist got back to its efficient offense with
a 4-1 goal streak from 23:28 to 15:00. Romano notched two of the goals to give
her, her third hat trick in her last four games. Junior Ashley Miller
(Montville, N.J.) broke into the scoring column with her goal at 15:13 and Tuck
closed the run with the Red Foxes' third draw control-sprint-goal combo of the
game at 15:00.
Binghamton cut into the Red Foxes' three goal lead slowly
over the final 15 minutes of regulation. After swapping goals at 13:45 and
12:10 to make the score 13-10 the Bearcats finished the second half by
outscoring Marist 5-2. Red Fox goal scorers during this final stretch of play
included Romano, Tuck and Miller. Of note, Kramer assisted on her third and
fourth goals of the game on Tuck and Miller's tallies.
After 60 minutes of action and the teams deadlocked at 15-15,
the game went into a six minute overtime period. Following a draw control by Tuck,
a well-worked Marist possession resulted in a Leonard goal, 1:05 in. In the
second half of the overtime period, Binghamton answered Marist with a tally
with 1:43 left on the clock. A draw control win by the Bearcats put the Red
Foxes on the ropes, but junior goalkeeper Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.)
came through with a huge save of a Brittany Stufano shot with 24 seconds left
to keep the game tied at 16.
With nothing resolved in the first overtime, Marist and
Binghamton faced off in a sudden death second overtime. Offense was at a
premium in this period, as neither team registered a shot in the first three-minute
half. Off of a Bearcat draw control at the beginning of the second half, a slow
building possession with numerous passes eventually set up Katherine Hunsberger
to notch the game-winning 17th goal with 1:09 on the clock.
As a team, Marist led in draw controls, 20-18, caused
turnovers, 13-12 and goalie saves, 8-2. Binghamton held advantages in shots at
34-24, ground balls at 27-23 and free-position goals at 4-2.
Individually, Binghamton's Kristen Stone led all scorers
with eight points on seven goals and an assist. Marist's offense was highlighted
by five points by Ariel Kramer on a goal and four assists, four points by Jamie
Romano on four goals, three points by Amanda Tuck on three goals and three
points by Shannon Haas on two goals and an assist. Romano also was a leading
Red Fox with a team-high five draw controls and five ground balls. She shared
the team lead of two caused turnovers with freshman Sheri Fauvell (Moorestown,
N.J.).
The Red Foxes will begin a four game road trip this
Sunday, March 11 when they face off with Saint Mary's (CA) in a neutral field
matchup at Denver University. The opening draw is slated for 6 p.m.
