POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's swimming and diving team hosted Fordham on Thursday evening in its 2013 home opener. The Red Foxes fell in a close contest, 130.5-112.5. The women's squad dropped to 1-1 overall.
Marist dominated the 50 yard freestyle, taking the top three spots. Senior Maddie Arciello (Missoula, Mont.) finished first with a time of 24.50. Freshman Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) placed second with a time of 23.94 and sophomore Bridget Curley (Endwell, N.Y.) finished third with a time of 25.21. Arciello earned her second victory of the night, winning the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.15. Wurtz was right behind her, finishing second with a time of 54.08.
The Red Foxes ended the meet with a victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The four-some of Curley, sophomore Bethany Powhida (Delmar, N.Y.), freshman Kelsey Forster (Beaverton, O.R.), and Wurtz tallied a time of 3:38.39.
The women's diving team swept Fordham, taking first, second, and third place in both the one meter and three meter diving events. Freshman Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.) won both the one meter and three meter diving events, scoring 269.65 and 260.10, respectively. Tobias qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in this meet.
Sophomore Renata Diotalevi (Madison, Conn.) placed second in the one meter, scoring 215.45 followed by senior Lauren Weiner (Feeding Hills, Mass.) in third with a score of 195.15. In the three meter event, Diotalevi finished second with a score of 228.20 and Weiner placed third with a time of 201.65.
The Red Foxes hit the road to face Fairfield on Saturday, Nov. 9. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Marist returns home on Saturday, Jan.18 as it hosts Boston College. First whistle is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the McCann Natatorium.
