Marist Men's Tennis Releases 2014 Spring Schedule

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men's tennis team has finalized its spring 2014 schedule as it looks to capture the program's 11th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship in the past 17 seasons. The 2014 schedule features six MAAC contests as well as ten non-conference face-offs.

The Red Foxes had a successful fall season, earning seven victories at the ITA Regionals in October, sweeping the University of Connecticut in singles matches, defeating Siena 6-1, and recording three flight championships at the Brown invitational to start the fall season.

“I like our spring schedule because we are playing schools some of whom are ranked and from seven different conferences,” said head coach Tim Smith. “With our senior laden team, and their fall accomplishments, we have positioned ourselves to win our 11th MAAC Championship.”

Marist opens up MAAC play with its first match of the season at Saint Peter's on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Last season, the Red Foxes swept Saint Peter's, 7-0. The squad then faces St. John's from the Big East on Friday, Feb. 7 before heading to Lehigh to play the home team from the Patriot League and Bryant from the Northeast Conference (NEC) the first weekend in March.

The following weekend, Marist heads to Ivy League's Yale for a tournament to face Fairleigh Dickinson, Yale, and Stony Brook. In the 2012-13 season, the Red Foxes defeated Stony Brook 4-1 and Fairleigh Dickinson 5-1, but fell to Yale, 7-0.

Marist resumes MAAC play and hosts its first home match of the season on Saturday, March 22 with a match against Niagara. The men defeated the Purple Eagles last season, 4-3. The Red Foxes continue MAAC play with a match at Rider on Thursday, March 27. Last season Marist swept the Broncs, 7-0.

The Red Foxes return to action that weekend with back-to-back non-conference matches against NJIT from the Great West Conference on Saturday, March 29 at home and on Sunday, March 30 at Hofstra from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). In their last meetings, Marist defeated NJIT 5-2 and Hofstra, 6-0.

Marist hosts consecutive home matches in April, beginning on Wednesday, Apr. 2 against MAAC rival, Fairfield. The Red Foxes defeated the Stags twice last season; first in the regular season, 5-2, and again in the MAAC Championships, 4-2. This match is followed by a non-conference face-off against Colgate from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Sunday, April 6.

Men's tennis closes out MAAC play with matches against conference newcomers Quinnipiac and Monmouth. Marist travels to Quinnipiac on Tuesday, April 8 then hosts Monmouth on Monday, April 14. The Red Foxes conclude the 2014 regular season with a home match on Tuesday, Apr. 15 against ECAC's Army. Marist faced Army twice last season, posting two 4-3 victories.
