McCarthy's Four-Hitter Lifts Marist Baseball To Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) tossed a complete game four-hitter, lifting the Marist baseball team to a 2-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Charleston Southern on Sunday. The victory enabled the Red Foxes to salvage a split after falling 9-0 in game one.

Freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore catcher Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Red Foxes with three hits apiece on the day.

Here is a closer look at each game, both of which went seven innings:

Game One - Charleston Southern 9 , Marist 0:

Strong pitching by Charleston Southern silenced Marist's bats to just five hits. Brennan led a quartet of Red Foxes with base hits as the sophomore catcher went 2-for-3 in the seven-inning contest.

Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.), Alec Petrone (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Pagano also added hits.

After the Buccaneers pushed single runs across the plate in the first and third innings, the hosts broke open the game in the fifth inning with four runs. One inning later, they would add three more runs with five hits, three of which were doubles. For the game, the Buccaneers hit six doubles.

Senior Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) took the loss for the Red Foxes as he went 4.1 innings and gave up six runs (five earned), while striking out four.

Game Two - Marist 2, Charleston Southern 1:

After falling down 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the Red Foxes came back to tie it in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. Senior Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) started the rally with a hit by pitch with the count at 2-2. Freshman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) moved Helmrich into scoring position with a single up the middle. With two runners on, Brennan hit a single through the left side of the diamond to drive in Helmrich.

Marist moved ahead in the top of the fifth as the team manufactured a single run with a pair of singles by Pagano and senior Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.). After moving to third base, Pagano would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice bunt by junior Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.).

McCarthy made the effort stand up with a standout performance. In addition to allowing just four hits, he permitted only walk while striking out four. He allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings, and threw 54 strikes in an economical 77 pitches.

Marist (2-2) will return to action with a three-game series at East Tennessee State this Friday through Sunday.
