Hofstra Gets Win Versus Marist In First-Ever Women's Lacrosse Meeting, 14-8

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On a cold, wet afternoon at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday, the Marist women's lacrosse team lost to Hofstra by a score of 14-8. A five goal run by the Red Foxes (0-4) in the second half would draw the game close, but ultimately an earlier 8-1 deficit was too much to overcome for the hosts versus an undefeated Pride (4-0) squad. Sophomore Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three goals; junior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) added a team-high four assists.

The first half played out in the favor the visitors by a large margin as Hofstra led on the scoreboard 7-1, in shots 15-4 and in caused turnovers 6-4. Marist's lone marker was notched by Brannigan at 10:05.

Coming out in the second half, the teams traded goals over the first seven minutes of action as Hofstra scored two and Marist scored two. Both of the Red Foxes' tallies were notched by senior Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) after receiving Larson passes.

After Hofstra built a game-high eight goal lead at 11-3 at 19:59, the Red Foxes would claw their way back into the contest with a five unanswered scores. The goal streak would begin just 16 seconds after the Pride marker when sophomore Sabrina Mattera (Wantagh, N.Y.) took a Larson pass and cut towards net and ripped a shot past Hofstra's Kelsey Gregerson.

Senior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) was the next scorer for Marist as she scored her team-leading 11th goal of 2013 at 17:08.

The next two markers were notched by Brannigan at 12:51 and 10:34.

A Mattera-Larson connection gave the Red Foxes their final goal of the game at 7:41.

Hofstra closed out the match with three tallies to make the final score 14-8.

For the game, the Pride outshot the Red Foxes 33-16 with a 23-13 advantage in shots on goal. Marist collected more draws at a 15-9 margin. Tuck registered a team-high six draw controls.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Wednesday, March 6 on the road at Binghamton. The opening draw between the teams is slated for 4 p.m.
