EDISON, N.J. – Marist water polo senior goalkeeper Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student-Athlete of the Week.
Thomas was the Red Foxes' starting goalie for the past two seasons after transferring from the University of Cape Town. She was twice named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the award in 2012 and winning in outright in 2013. In 67 games in her Marist career, Thomas owned a 37-28 record with a .584 save percentage and 7.87 goals against average and had 29 career games with at least 10 saves. This past season, she went 23-12 with 271 saves for a .521 save percentage and 8.10 goals against average.
A Communications major, Thomas also excels in the classroom. She was a member of the 2013 MAAC All-Academic Team and last week was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team. She is now eligible for Academic All-American consideration.
The MAAC chooses its male and female honorees on a rotational basis among the conference's 10 schools. Thomas is the eighth Red Fox to be honored this year, following Arquimedes DelaCruz (cross country/track), Chelsea Botta (women's soccer), Jay Bowie (men's basketball), Kate Conard (women's swimming & diving), Joris Van Eck (men's tennis), Emily Osterhaus (softball) and Brett Houseal (baseball).
The Marist water polo team enjoyed a strong 2013 campaign, finishing the season with an overall record of 25-12. The Red Foxes won a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 10-2 conference record. They entered the MAAC Championships as the third seed, falling to eventual champion Iona 12-9 in the semifinals.
