Men's Swimming and Diving Dominates Seton Hall, Celebrates Class of 2014

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men's swimming and diving team retaliated from its loss to Seton Hall last season with a 177-118 victory over the Pirates. Of the 16 events for the day, Marist claimed wins in 14 of them throughout the meet. The Red Foxes have now improved their regular season record to 8-2 overall, 4-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

For the first time in program history, the Red Foxes posted the top three spots for the men's and women's teams in consecutive events. The women's team started the trend with senior Maddie Arciello (Missoula, Mont.) leading in first (25.02), as freshman Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and sophomore Bridget Curley (Endwell, N.Y.) followed directly behind in second and third, respectively. The men followed suit with junior John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) posting a first place finish (21.61), while senior Alex Lombardi (Branford, Conn.) and junior Spencer Kelley (Weston, Conn.) took second and third, respectively.

Junior Jason Ruddy (Lake Katrine, N.Y.) won all three of his events, while also claiming first place with the 400 yard freestyle relay, which finished with a time of 3:17.23. Ruddy finished the 100 yard breaststroke in 59.82, while finishing the 200 yard individual medley in 1:56.78, both season best times. He also claimed first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 52.59.

Spitzer had the second most first place finishes for Marist, posting two victories in individual events, and finishing first with the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.23. Spitzer swam the 50 yard freestyle in 21.61, and finished the 100 yard freestyle in 48.43.

In the diving events, junior Jacob Baker (Shaverton, Pa.) took first place in the one-meter with a score of 296.63, while senior Sean Molloy (Slingerlands, N.Y.) took third place in the event. In the three-meter dive, sophomore Josh Dodway (Niskayuna, N.Y.) claimed first place with a score of 300.60, while Molloy and Baker finished in second and third, respectively.

Also for the Red Foxes, junior Sean Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y.) posted two first-place finishes for the meet, winning the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:03.20) and the 200 yard butterfly (1:59.37). Freshman Ryan Murphy (New Fairfield, Conn.) also claimed two victories, winning the 200 yard freestyle (1:46.42) and the 500 yard freestyle (1:56.78). Also for Marist, junior Nick Vandermolen (Brielle, N.J.) took first place in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:15.78. The 400 yard freestyle relay, consisting of Spitzer, sophomore Caleb Camp (Chapel Hill, N.C.), senior Alex Lombardi (Branford, Conn.), and Ruddy, took first place with a time of 3:17.23.

The men's team also took the top three spots in the 500 yard freestyle, with Sullivan and junior Brendan McCarthy (West Chester, Pa.) following behind Murphy in second and third place, respectively.

Murphy also posted a second place finish in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:10.09). In the 100 yard backstroke, Spinella and Camp took second (53.62) and third (54.06) places, respectively. Freshman David Dimarco (Nazareth, Pa.) took third place in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard breaststroke. Freshman Alex Cassel (East Greenville, Pa.) took second in the 200 yard butterfly and third in the 100 yard butterfly. Camp also took second in the 200 yard backstroke (1:58.32).

In addition to the men's eighth victory, Marist kicked off the meet to commemorate the Class of 2014 for Senior Day.

The Red Foxes will travel to Binghamton next weekend for their last regular season meet of the season. The meet is set for 1 p.m. in Binghamton, N.Y.
