BALTIMORE, Md. - The Marist women's swimming and diving team remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition, defeating Iona, 247-117, and taking down Saint Peter's, 250-110, at the H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 5-6. After falling to host Loyola, 255-115, the Red Foxes stand at 5-2 overall with all five victories coming against conference opponents.
Junior captain Bethany Powhida (Delmar, N.Y.) and sophomore Meredith Wurtz (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) each had a third-place finish in the second and final session of the tri-meet Dec. 6. Powhida clocked in at 2:04.67 in the 200-yard backstroke, while Wurtz finished the 100-yard freestyle in 52.13 seconds. Powhida and Wurtz also raced on Marist's 400-yard freestyle team alongside junior Bridget Curley (Endwell, N.Y.) and freshman Georgia Goldman (Douglaston, N.Y.). The foursome finished in second place with a time of 3:33.91.
The Red Foxes took the top three spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle as well as the 3- and 1-meter dives to highlight the road tri-meet. The freshman trio of Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Deirdre Connor (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Shannon Gordon (Wantagh, N.Y.) dominated the field of 13 competitors in the 1,650-yard freestyle Dec. 6, registering the three best times in the MAAC. Haraden won the event in 17:28.20, while Connor took second place (17:47.06) followed by Gordon close behind in third (17:47.43).
On the 3-meter springboard, freshman Megan Berardelli (Ambler, Pa.) took the top spot, racking up 272.55 points Dec. 6. Senior Kimberly Tobias (San Jose, Calif.) finished in second place with 238.75 points and junior Renata Diotalevi (Madison, Conn.) finished in third place. Tobias won the 1-meter event, which was held Dec. 5, with 243.80 points. Berardelli (223.00 points) and Diotalevi (217.20 points) rounded out the top three competitors.
Marist will return to McCann Natatorium on Jan. 10 for a dual meet against Southern Connecticut State set to begin at 1 p.m.
