PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Marist water polo team opened the Arizona State University (ASU) Tournament against ASU and Azusa Pacific. The Red Foxes fell to ASU 14-1, but retaliated with a victory over Azusa (11-6).
In the loss to ASU, junior Anna-Lena Hathaway scored Marist's only goal, while sophomore Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) posted ten saves in the loss.The Red Foxes committed no turnovers throughout the game, and defended all three of their man-down situations.
The Red Foxes snapped their-six game losing streak with the win over Azusa Pacific. Freshman Amanda Amorosa (Montreal, QC) led Marist with five goals in the outing.
Junior Allison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) opened the scoring for the Red Foxes in the first quarter before the Cougars answered with a goal. Marist dominated the second quarter as Amoroso tallied three goals to help the Red Foxes post a four-goal lead.
In the third quarter, Henry posted three saves to force a scoreless quarter for the Cougars. Azusa Pacific would not catch up as Marist clinched another victory.
Also for the Red Foxes, Allison Hamby claimed three goals, while junior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) posted two and freshman Jocelyn McQuade (Vancouver, BC) added another one. Henry tallied 13 saves in the outing.
Marist moves on to play Occidental at 1:30 p.m. eastern time, before taking on Whittier at 5 p.m., for the second day of the tournament.
