LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Marist women's lacrosse team (3-1, 0-0 MAAC) defeated Fresno State (1-3, 0-1 MWC) on Sunday, 17-8. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 3-1 overall. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the way for Marist with five goals. Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) had four goals and one assist.
Junior Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) contributed two goals and an assist while senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) had one goal and one assist. Sophomores Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.), Kaitlyn Brown (Port Washington, N.Y.), juniors Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Erin Schroeder (Vero Beach, Fla.), and freshman Olivia Pitonzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched one goal each for Marist.
Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) and junior goalie Liz Holmes (Longmeadow, Mass.) combined for four saves. Marist outshot Fresno State 37-to-13 and won 21 draw controls to seven by the Bulldogs.
Fresno State struck first, scoring at the 28:33 mark in the first half to take an early 1-0 lead. Marist scored the next 11 goals to take an 11-1 lead with 13:22 left in the first half. Romano kicked off the streak with a hat trick, followed by one goal from Gionta, assisted by Leonard. Leonard scored the next two, unassisted, followed by two more from Romano, one assisted by Larson. DiMaria, Schroeder, and Brown rounded out the scoring for the Red Foxes with one goal each. The Bulldogs closed the half with three goals to trail Marist 11-4 at the half.
Fresno State opened up the second half with a goal to trail Marist 11-5 with 26:23 left in the second half. Marist scored six consecutive goals to take a 17-5 lead at the 13:24 mark. Gionta notched two unassisted goals, followed by an assist to Pitonzo for her lone goal of the game. Gionta netted her final goal of the game to push Marist ahead 15-5. McHugh and Larson scored one each to round out the scoring for the Red Foxes. The Bulldogs scored three goals to conclude the half but it wouldn't be enough as Marist defeated Fresno State, 17-8.
The Red Foxes return to action on Friday, Feb. 7 at Hofstra. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
