POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women's tennis team defeated Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Friday afternoon, 5-2. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
“Today our players stepped up in a lot of different areas,” said head coach Jason Sacher. “I thought it was a good team effort overall. We're happy to have the win and we'll look to be ready for a tough opponent tomorrow against UConn.”
Sophomore Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) kicked off singles play on a good note for the Red Foxes, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brianna Turano. Freshman Callie Morlock (Golden, Colo.) fell to Gabriella Leon, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Senior Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) picked up a win at third singles for Marist, taking down Caitlin Bricketto, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Melissa Carlay (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) topped Salua Pizano, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Nikki Rohan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) dropped a tough 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 decision to Alyssa Rosello at fifth singles. Sophomore Katie Seitz (Pennington, N.Y.) rounded out singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Catherine Clark.
Marist picked up the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Morlock and Pang were blanked by Turano and Leon in first doubles, 8-0. Sophomore Kaye Eastman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Carlay defeated Pizano and Bricketto, 8-0. Seitz and Campbell downed Clark and Rosello in the final doubles match to win the point, 8-5.
Marist returns to action on Saturday, April 12 at UConn. The match is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m.
