HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Marist men's lacrosse team (3-8, 1-3 MAAC) fell to Hofstra in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday night, 15-10. Junior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with a career-high six goals.

Junior Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) contributed two goals while classmate Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) and sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) had one goal each. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) and sophomore Dillon Walker (Wawa, Pa.) posted one assist each.

Junior goalkeeper Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 14 saves in the net for Marist. Joka collected a career-high five ground balls, matched a team-high with sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.). Joka also caused a team-high two turnovers.

Hofstra opened up the game with two quick goals by Drew Coholan and Mike Malave to take a 2-0 lead with 11:28 left in the first quarter. Begley responded with an unassisted goal at the 8:11 mark to pull Marist within one. Korey Hendrickson put the Pride back ahead 3-1 with 7:04 left in the first. The final seven minutes of the quarter would be scoreless to give Hofstra a 3-1 edge heading into the second quarter.

Joka opened up the second quarter with an unassisted goal less than two minutes in to cut the Pride lead, 3-2. Torin Varn netted back-to-back goals in one minute for Hofstra to push ahead of the Red Foxes 5-2 with 12:15 left in the second quarter. Radin and Nesmith responded with consecutive unassisted goals in a 60 second span to cut the Red Fox deficit, 5-4, with 10:10 left in the second quarter.

Following five scoreless minutes, Varn netted his third goal of the game to push the Pride ahead 6-4 with 4:28 left in the second quarter. Hofstra's Coholan would get one more goal in before time expired to give Hofstra a 7-4 advantage at the half.

Marist opens up the third quarter of play with a goal by Nesmith, assisted by Recor, to take advantage of the man-up opportunity. Hofstra led the Red Foxes 7-5 with 12:41 left in the third. Malave, Sam Llinares, and Nick Altmann netted three consecutive goals to push the Pride ahead of Marist, 10-5, with 7:21 left in the third quarter.

The Red Foxes took advantage of another man-up opportunity as Joka found the back of the net for the second time with 5:28 left in the third quarter to cut Hofstra's lead, 10-6. Nesmith scored his third and fourth goals of the game, one assisted by Walker, in a two minute period to cut the Pride's lead, 10-8 with 1:47 left. Hofstra's Varn was able to score one more at the 1:06 mark to lead Marist 11-8 at the end of the third quarter.

Varn opened up the fourth quarter with his fifth goal of the game for Hofstra to give the Pride a 12-8 lead with 13:16 left. Nesmith converted on his fifth goal of the game as well to bring his Red Foxes within three of Hofstra at the 10:36 mark. After five full scoreless minutes Varn took advantage of a Marist penalty and scored his sixth goal for the Pride to increase Hofstra's lead, 13-9. Hendrickson followed up Varn's goal with one of this own to give Hofstra a 14-9 lead heading into the final two and a half minutes of play.

Nesmith wouldn't go quietly and scored his sixth of the game to bring Marist within four of Hofstra with 2:29 left in the fourth. Malave scored one last goal for the Pride at the 1:45 mark seal Hofstra's 15-10 victory. Hofstra improves to 8-3 on the year while Marist moves to 3-8 overall.

The Red Foxes return to action in 11 days as they resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday, April 19 against Monmouth. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
