Marist Powers Its Way To Win Over Southern Connecticut

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In its first home meet in nearly two months, the Marist men's swimming and diving team (6-2, 4-1) picked up a convincing 162-118 win over Southern Connecticut State on Jan 10.

Senior Jacob Baker (Shavertown, Pa.) won both diving events to lead the Red Foxes. He began the afternoon qualifying for the NCAA Zone Qualifier Championships at three meters with a score of 320.48 points. In the 1-meter dive, he finished with 271.72 points.

The seniors continued to rack up points for Marist, with captain Nick Vandermolen (Brielle, N.J.) winning a pair of breaststroke events and John Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) taking two freestyle events. Vandermolen led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100-yard event with a time of 1:01.79. Freshman Sam Presgraves (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore Harris Nagle (Allentown, Pa.) followed in second (1:02.96) and third (1:04.22), respectively. To close out the first half of the meet, Spitzer clocked in at 21.36 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. He stroked to a time of 48.47 seconds in the 100-yard event.

Vandermolen and Spitzer swam the final two legs of the 200-yard medley relay to give the Red Foxes an early 11 points. The squad finished with a time of 1:37.44.

Victories in the backstroke from top to bottom solidified the strong Marist showing, as senior Dylan Cummings (Midland Park, N.J.) and freshman Jackson Wahl (Portland, Ore.) finished first and second respectively in the 100- and 200-yard events.

Marist will travel to Boston College for a dual meet against the Eagles that begins at 1 p.m. Jan. 17.
