KENT, Ohio ? The Marist men's basketball team took it down to the wire but in the end fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes, 79-72, Saturday night at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio.
Freshman Brian Parker scored a career high 30 points on 11-for-14 shooting from the field. Parker also pulled down seven rebounds and had two steals. Parker was unstoppable getting to the paint and went 8-for-10 shooting from the free throw line.
The Marist backcourt combined for 57 of the Red Foxes 72 points as Khallid Hart scored 27 of his own on 7-for-11 shooting from three and 9-for-15 overall from the field. With his 20 point effort Hart has now topped 20 points in all three of Marist's games this year.
Marist trailed Kent State in points in the paint by just two, 34-32, in a game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes. The Red Foxes took the lead three times within the last nine minutes but were unable to hold off the Kent State bounce-backs.
With under nine minutes left Marist took their first lead of the second half after a three pointer from Hart, a driving layup from Parker, and another foray to the hoop that resulted in two free throws from Parker capped a 7-0 run and gave the team a 59-57 lead.
The Golden Flashes would respond but another driving layup from Parker resulted in a hoop and a harm that would put the Red Foxes in the lead again, this time 63-61 with 5:11 remaining.
After another response from Kent State, a deep three off a screen by Hart gave the Red Foxes their last lead of the game at 68-65 with 3:45 remaining.
Kent State knocked down a three of their own on the next possession and were able to hold on after two consecutive charge calls against Marist stunted the Red Foxes offense and a foul call on a seemingly clean block from Truog led to more Kent State free-throws.
As a team the Red Foxes finished 27-for-53 (.509) from the field and 8-for-22 (.364) from three point land. Marist shot 10-for-14 from the free throw stripe opposite 23-for-29 by Kent State.
Jimmy Hall paced Kent State with 27 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Flashes outrebounded the Red Foxes, 37-26.
Marist is now 1-2 on the season. Kent State is 2-1. The Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 29 at Vermont. Opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
