POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to three-time defending America East Conference champion Albany by a score of 75-53 on Wednesday night at McCann Arena.
Red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart led Marist with 14 points to go along with four assists. Freshman guard/forward Isaiah Lamb added 10 points off the bench. Sophomore center Connor McClenaghan scored a career-high eight in 15 minutes off the bench. Freshman guard Brian Parker was held to a season-low six points, but led the Red Foxes in both rebounds with five as well as a career-high three steals.
Albany had three double-digit scorers, led by Ray Sanders with 18 points. The Great Danes also had two double-digit rebounders, paced by Greig Stire with 14. Pete Hooley dished out a game-high six assists.
Albany outrebounded Marist, 47-24. The Great Danes shot .491 (28-for-57) from the field and .462 (6-for-13) from three-point range. Marist shot .373 (19-for-51) from the field and .208 (5-for-24) from three-point range.
Albany jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 13:47 mark, but Marist responded with an 11-0 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes. The Great Danes battled back, and the lead switched hands four times in a two-minute span. The first three-pointer of the season from senior center Eric Truog gave Marist a 20-18 with 5:39 left in the half. Two free throws by Albany's Joe Cremo tied the game at 20 on the Great Danes' next possession, and then a breakout layup by Cremo at the 4:40 mark gave his team the lead.
The Great Danes held a 32-28 lead after the first 20 minutes. With 18:49 to play, a driving layup by Marist freshman forward Ryan Funk tied the score at 34. Albany responded with a 13-0 run, as Marist was held scoreless for the next five minutes. The Great Danes led by double digits the rest of the way, and expanded their lead to as much as 26 before being held scoreless over the final 2:48.
In the second half, Albany shot .552 (16-for-29) from the field and .714 (5-for-7) from three-point range, while Marist shot .333 (8-for-24) from the field and .100 (1-for-10) from three-point range.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes take on Delaware in the final home non-conference game of the season. Tip-off at McCann Arena is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available, and are on sale at GoRedFoxes.com.
