JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 69-68 defeat at Jacksonville in its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday.
Red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart paced three Red Foxes in double digits with 21 points. Freshman guard Brian Parker scored 16 and dished out a career-high three assists. Freshman guard/forward Isaiah Lamb scored 11 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Marcel White paced Jacksonville with 20 points and seven rebounds. White shot 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range. Kori Babineaux and Darius Dawkins added 17 and 12 points, respectively. Darien Fernandez and Antwon Clayton tied for the game high with eight rebounds.
Both teams shot well from three-point range, as Marist shot 12-for-26 (.462) from deep and Jacksonville was 10-for-22 (.455). The Dolphins held a 42-25 edge in rebounds.
The game was scoreless for the first 2:28, until Hart opened the scoring with a three-pointer. However, Jacksonville responded by scoring the next eight points over a five-minute span. The Dolphins led by as much as eight in the first half, but the Red Foxes cut their deficit to two at the half on a half-court buzzer beater by freshman Kristinn Palsson.
Jacksonville expanded its lead to a game high of nine on three occasions in the second half. But the Red Foxes fought back, and a three-pointer by Lamb with 5:32 remaining gave Marist its first lead of the second half at 59-57. Over the next 3:10, there were three ties and three lead changes. With 2:05 to play, Jacksonville took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Dawkins at 69-66. The Red Foxes cut their deficit to one on a basket by Hart with 1:18 remaining. Marist had one last possession with 11.6 seconds remaining, but was unable to get a shot off.
Marist is now 4-7; Jacksonville is 6-8. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Red Foxes.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes return to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play by hosting Canisius. Tip-off at McCann Arena is set for 7 p.m.
