USAFA, Colo. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (1-0) battled to a 7-6 win at Air Force (0-2) to open its 2015 season Feb. 14. Senior Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) had a hat trick, scoring two of his three goals in the fourth quarter in the Red Foxes' victory.
Begley also led Marist with four ground balls. On the defensive end, senior Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) faced 42 shots from the Falcons, making 14 saves. Junior Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) won 10 of 17 faceoffs.
Junior Doug Gouchoe made six saves between the pipes for Air Force.
Marist never trailed in the contest, which featured a pair of ties. The Red Foxes got on the board first at the 11:36 mark on a goal from junior Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.), but the Falcons answered a little more than a minute later with the first of five scores from freshman Chris Walsch.
Freshman Gannon Morrison (Cary, N.C.) fed senior Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) to begin a 4-0 scoring spree for the Red Foxes. The Marist run was capped by goals from Morrison and Begley 50 seconds apart. Both teams went into halftime with the score 5-3 in favor of Marist.
With 8:17 to go in the third, the Falcons completed a four-goal run of their own with Walsch's third straight score to tie the game at five. Begley's final goal gave the Red Foxes enough of a cushion however, as the defense held off the Falcons for the final 2:35 to preserve Marist's first victory of the season.
The Red Foxes will travel to Binghamton for a 12 p.m. contest Feb. 21 before hosting Stony Brook in their home opener at 7 p.m. March 3.
