BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Marist women's lacrosse team picked up its second straight one-goal victory defeating Vermont, 11-10, on Feb. 28 to move to 2-1 on the season.

Senior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) and sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) had hat tricks. All three of Brannigan's goals came in the second half when Marist outscored the Catamounts 7-4 and went 3-for-3 on free position shots. Sophomore Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made a game-high nine saves and posted a game-high four ground balls.

Both teams traded scores before Vermont took a 4-2 lead at the 13:29 mark in the first half. Junior Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) put the Red Foxes ahead with her fifth goal of the season, but Marist still trailed 6-4 at halftime.

A 4-0 burst from Marist began the second half. Gionta's goal with 21:37 left pulled Marist ahead 7-6, and Brannigan scored two more on free position shots to kick start and cap the Red Foxes' run.

Vermont got within one goal three times, but could not come all the way back and fell to 2-2. Senior Marcie Marino had a hat trick and won three draw controls for the Catamounts. Senior Meg Hopkins made five saves and scooped up three ground balls.

Marist returns to Tenney Stadium for a non-conference matchup against Hofstra, scheduled for 7 p.m. March 6.
