VESTAL, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team (3-2) defeated Binghamton, 11-9, on its first contest of a four-game road trip.
The Red Foxes got goals from seven different players on offense. Senior captain Sheridan Fauvell (Moorestown, N.J.) led the Marist defense by causing three turnovers and collecting five ground balls. Senior Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made six saves for her third win of the season.
Junior Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) got Marist on the board at the 27:47 mark of the first half, but the Bearcats pulled even 3:22 later. A score from senior Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.) with 23:54 remaining in the first half made it 2-1 and the Red Foxes never trailed from that point on.
Binghamton cut the lead to three before junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) netted her ninth goal of the season on a free position shot with 2:04 left in the first half. Her score made it 6-2 in favor of Marist after the first half.
Gionta's second goal of the game at the 15:56 mark of the second half and a score from senior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) ballooned the Marist lead to four. Binghamton would cut the deficit in half on a pair of goals from sophomore Callon Williams, but the Bearcats could not complete the comeback.
Williams registered a hat trick for Binghamton and sophomore Valerie DeNapoli posted team highs with five draw control wins and three ground balls.
Both teams were even in shots (20) and turnovers (13). Marist owned an 8-3 edge in assists and scooped up 17 ground balls to Binghamton's 13.
The Red Foxes will face off against Stetson at 6 p.m. March 18.
