JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Marist women's lacrosse team dropped its first away contest of the season, falling to the Jacksonville Dolphins, 11-9, on Friday. The Red Foxes are now 4-3 in 2015.
Freshman Morgan Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y.) scored her first career goal with 5:58 remaining in the first half and finished with two scores. On defense, junior captain Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) scooped up a team-high four ground balls, while sophomore Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made nine saves in net.
There were five goals in an offensively dominated first 7:50, capped by a goal from sophomore Olivia Pitonzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) on a free position shot to put the Red Foxes within one. Jacksonville ripped off a 4-1 run to add to its lead, but Marist would mount a comeback effort in the second half, outscoring the Dolphins 6-4.
Junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) assisted on two goals, including one from sophomore Hayley Burke (Massapequa, N.Y.) that cut the deficit to 10-8 with 4:31 left in the game. Dolphins freshman Caitlin McMahon increased the lead to three inside the final minute, and McHugh countered with her 14th goal of the season 10 seconds later for the final score of the contest.
Jacksonville got goals from eight different players and picked up 14 ground balls. Sophomore Rachel Aus scored a pair of goals and collected three ground balls. The Marist offense fired 22 shots.
