NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team (5-3) ended its four-game road trip with a 12-11 comeback win at Iona in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener March 25.
Junior Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a feed from junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) with 1:26 left in the second half. Iona had a shot hit the crossbar on their final possession before the Red Foxes earned their third win in their last four games on a drizzly afternoon.
Gionta tied her career-high with six assists, while senior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) and sophomore Hayley Burke (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored three goals apiece on the attack unit.
McHugh won a game-best six draw controls, while sophomore Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) made 11 saves and collected three ground balls.
There were five ties in the conference opener for both sides, but Marist never trailed in the first half. Sophomore Olivia Pitonzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) at the 12:17 mark broke a 3-3 draw, while McHugh's free position goal with 29 seconds left in the first half sent the Red Foxes into the locker room with a 7-6 lead.
A 4-0 Iona run that included two free position goals gave the Gaels an 11-9 edge, but they would not score again. Unassisted goals from Brannigan and Burke gave them both hat tricks and tied the contest with exactly two minutes remaining. McHugh's game-winner came on the stick side of Gaels' goalie Blaire Nathanson after McHugh won the draw control and snuck over to the right side.
Three players had hat tricks for the Gaels, including sophomore Erin Pugh, who led Iona with three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
The Red Foxes outshot Iona 29-25 and owned a 17-8 advantage in draw controls.
Marist is 3-1 in its last four games and will host MAAC rival Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. March 28 in Tenney Stadium.
