POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (2-1) fell to Stony Brook in its first loss of the season, dropping a 14-10 contest to the Seawolves in its 2015 home opener March 4.
Junior Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and senior Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) each posted hat tricks for Marist. In the faceoff X, junior Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) went 14-for-24 and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls. Senior Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made eight saves in goal.
Joka got Marist on the board 51 seconds into the contest, taking the Red Foxes' first shot of the game from right over the middle. There were three ties and one lead change during the rest of the first half. With 2:27 left in the second quarter, senior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) scored his fifth goal of the season to put Marist within one. Stony Brook led 6-5 at the half.
Three man up goals highlighted a comeback third quarter for the Red Foxes. An illegal equipment penalty by Seawolves' sophomore Mark Ellis gave the Red Foxes three minutes of power play time. Sophomore J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) assisted on all three goals with the man advantage, which were scored by Joka, sophomore John Vigh (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Radin, respectively.
With 1:18 left in the third quarter, senior Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) cut the Stony Brook lead to 10-9 with an unassisted score. That would be as close as the Red Foxes would get however.
Marist's defense caused three turnovers and collected 26 ground balls in the losing effort. On the other side, Stony Brook's offense fired 39 shots and tallied eight assists.
Senior Mike Rooney, junior Brody Eastwood, and junior Chris Hughes each posted hat tricks for Stony Brook. Sophomore Hayden Johnstone made eight saves between the pipes.
Recor dished out a game-high four assists. With three more scores in the game, Joka has now netted 10 goals against Stony Brook in his career and eight for the 2015 season.
Marist hosts High Point in its next contest at 12 p.m. March 7 in Tenney Stadium.
