WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Marist women's lacrosse team (7-5, 3-2 MAAC) lost its second away contest of the season, falling to Monmouth in an 11-10 game on April 11.
Five goals from junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) led the offense and sophomore Olivia Pitonzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) dished out a career-high three assists. Senior Sheridan Fauvell (Moorestown, N.J.) posted a game-high four caused turnovers while junior Brittany Tricarico (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) collected three ground balls.
Marist came out of the gate shooting low on Hawks' senior goalie Katie Donohoe, as Gionta's consecutive scores gave the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead with 11:30 left in the first half. With 1:56 to play, sophomore Hayley Burke (Massapequa, N.Y.) netted her first of three goals on a free position shot to make it 5-3 at the midway point.
Unanswered goals from Monmouth at the beginning of the second half gave the Hawks a comfortable lead, but Marist chewed up the clock with a 3-0 run that spanned 4:05.
With 6:57 remaining in the second half, Gionta fed senior Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.) on the right side to tie the game at 9. In a role reversal DiMaria fed Gionta for a score in front with 0:59 left, but the Red Foxes could not get a shot off on their final posession in the Monmouth end as time expired.
Marist won the turnover battle, causing nine to Monmouth's 6 and committing four fewer turnovers than the Hawks. The Red Foxes' defense also finished with 18 ground balls.
Monmouth junior Kristina Vangeli scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. On offense, junior Marial Pierce and senior Allison Stathius each had hat tricks.
The Red Foxes will play their next two contests in Tenney Stadium, hosting Siena at 4 p.m. April 15 and facing off against Fairfield at 1 p.m. April 18 on Senior Day.
