RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist women's lacrosse team fell to Manhattan, 9-8, to end the 2015 regular season. The loss brought the Red Foxes to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
Marist's defeat coupled with Siena's 10-9 win over Niagara today gives the Red Foxes the no. 5 seed in the MAAC Championships. Marist will play at the Saints in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament at 3 p.m. April 25.
For the fifth consecutive game, junior Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) got a hat trick, scoring all her goals in the first half. Classmate Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) chipped in two assists, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers, while senior Erin Schroeder (Vero Beach, Fla.) won four draws to tie her career high.
Marist bursted out to a 5-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the contest. A free position goal by senior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) and a score from Gionta 10 seconds later highlighted the fast offensive start. The Jaspers had a 5-2 run on a counter attack but senior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit the back of the net to help Marist gain a two-goal lead at halftime.
The tide turned in Manhattan's favor in the second half. An unassisted score from freshman Morgan Jaycox (Amityville, N.Y.) at the 10:22 mark brought the Red Foxes within one.
With 30 seconds remaining, Gionta got Jaspers' senior goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli to cough up the ball. Coming out of a Marist timeout Viscount had a shot hit the crossbar with 23 seconds left on what would be the Red Foxes' final possession.
Manhattan's leading scorer, junior Megan Yarusso, racked up six points while Fiorinelli scooped up six ground balls and made 14 saves in the final game of her career.
Marist outshout the Jaspers 26-19 and caused nine turnovers, two of which came from McHugh.
